The recent Supreme Court judgment on khap panchyats comes as an extremely timely intervention. Terming honour killings, or the brutal execution of community members defying caste or gotra rules when choosing partners as "barbaric & shameful", the court decreed khap panchyats ordering such acts illegal. Alongside, Justice Markandey Katju commented that such behaviour must be 'ruthlessly stamped out'. The apex court's summary has fallen on ears long accustomed to hearing only their own writ resound. Khap panchayats have shot back that they've existed since time immemorial, framing laws for the community's benefit and protection.
